We have a questions regarding correct billing involving a student in training who caught the baby at delivery. The provider was present the whole time as a preceptor. We are not a resident teaching facility. Are we still able to bill for the delivery service?

Thank you so much!

Usually in the delivery room, the physician is in attendance, but a delivery nurse does the bulk of the work. As long as the physician is in the room, and upon delivery, works with the maternity team to stabilize the newborn postpartum, the delivery charge can be billed. Who caught the baby doesn’t apply to billing.
